about us
Calcutt - Dowling Funeral Home has provided funeral services for families in Florence, South Carolina. We take great pride in our funeral services, our focus is to provide individualized funeral services designed to meet the needs of each family. We are happy to guide you through all aspects of your loved one's funeral or memorial service.
OUR STORY: FIFTY YEARS OF SERVICE AND DEVOTION
Our story began on October 21, 1976, as Evans Funeral Home, Inc. Built by a core group of local families dedicated to honoring neighbors, they conducted our very first service on June 8, 1977.
In 1980, we officially transitioned to Cain Funeral Home, Inc., entering a period of significant growth. To better serve our community, a massive 1989 renovation project effectively doubled the size of our facility and we were the first to have an on-site crematory in the region.
Later known as Cain Calcutt Funeral Home, today we take our next step forward. Local funeral professionals R. Lee Calcutt Jr. and Sandy Dowling have formally combined their lifelong passions for service to create Calcutt-Dowling Funeral Home. Along with Office Manager, Heather Dowling Burnham, our team brings a deeply rooted history of care to the Florence community. Continued updates to the facility are being made to keep up with the services that families have come to expect.
OUR TEAM & LEADERSHIP
R. Lee Calcutt Jr.
Serving the funeral home profession since 2000, Lee has spent over two decades becoming a steady, comforting presence for families facing loss. Known throughout Florence for his warm personality, clarity, and unwavering kindness, Lee believes that those who walk through our doors may arrive as strangers, but they always leave as family. His deep roots in the community and enduring commitment to compassionate service form the heartbeat and vision of Calcutt-Dowling Funeral Home.
Sandy Dowling
Sandy has been immersed in the funeral profession nearly his entire life. Growing up with a father and older brother in the industry, Sandy spent his childhood helping around the funeral home wherever he was needed. What began as a family job naturally evolved into a profound, lifelong calling. For Sandy, it remains an absolute honor each time a family entrusts him with the care of a loved one, and he is fiercely committed to offering steady guidance when it matters most.
Heather Dowling Burnham
Heather brings a lifetime of unique experience to her role as Office Manager by being the daughter of John Dowling. From a little girl, helping move flowers to prepare for visitations and funerals, to waiting patiently at night, at the top of the stairs, to help him turn out the lights after the last family member left. Through her years of working by his side, she learned firsthand the profound impact of genuine empathy. Heather carries that same warmth, compassion, and respect into everything she does to support our families today.

SHARED ROOTS & PHILOSOPHY
Lee, Sandy, and Heather share a unique professional bond, having previously worked alongside one another at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. They credit much of their professional foundation to the mentorship of John F. Dowling. His gentle guidance and tutelage continue to heavily influence how they lead today, reminding them daily of the importance of providing meaningful, heartfelt care during life’s most difficult moments. Deeply rooted in this community, Lee, Sandy, and Heather grew up here, live here, and stand ready to support our friends, neighbors, and family.
