William Mark Sutherland, 62, passed away Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at his home in Florence, SC. Mark was born February 12, 1952 in Lynchburg, VA. He graduated from Graham High School in Bluefield, VA, in June 1970. After attending Southwest Virginia Community College, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Mark proudly served three years onboard the USS Koelsch (DE-1049), completing two deployments to the Mediterranean and West Africa. After leaving the Navy in June 1975, Mark began a long career in the medical support and private security industry. Mark grew up in the coal fields of West Virginia and southwest Virginia and lived in Florence, SC, Richlands and Virginia Beach, VA. He was an ardent Dallas Cowboys and Duke Blue Devils fan. Mark was predeceased by his mother, Jacqueline Coeburn Sutherland. He is survived by his father, Clarence Gene Sutherland of Florence, SC; brother John "Mike" Sutherland, CDR, USN Ret (Judy) of Jacksonville, FL, niece Jennifer Sutherland of Everett, MA, nephew Michael Sutherland of Boulder, CO, three step sisters- Barbara Harmon (Sam) of Columbia, SC; Becky Vickers (Mike) of Newport, RI; Amanda Snedeker (Charlie) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and stepbrother BT Daniels (Bridgette) of Pamplico, SC. A memorial service and internment with full military honors will be held at a later date at the Jacksonville, FL, National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, 875 N. Randolph Street, Suite 225, Arlington, VA 22203.
