Dr. William Farrell Heatley of Florence, South Carolina, formerly of Marco Island, FL and Clarkston, passed away on January 16, 2021 at the age of 89. Dr. Heatley was the husband of Norma Mae Heatley for 45 years; Father of William Heatley Jr., Robert Heatley, Brigid (Christopher) Kennedy, Stepfather of Terry (Linda) Palmeter, David Palmeter; Grandfather of Matthew L., Michelle, Matthew, Laura, Leigh Ann, Carrie, Colleen, Sinead; and his loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Caroline (Heatley) Kuhlman, first wife Genevieve Fordham, son Robert Heatley, sister Suzanne (Heatley) Duffey, stepson David Palmeter, and his wife, Norma.
He was born in Toledo, Ohio to Fannie (Ransom) and Robert Heatley on August 20, 1931. He had many names including Billy, Bill, Uncle Bill, Willy, Dad and perhaps the one that defined him - Doc. Bill was a founding physician of Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital and had a private practice in Waterford for 40 years. Last of a breed of general practitioners who still delivered babies, preformed general surgery, and made house calls. When he retired in 2001, he was treating the children of babies he had delivered. Bill led an adventurous life. He served in the Airforce during the Korean War, attended the University of Toledo and medical school at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. He traveled extensively with his wife, visiting Europe, Israel, Philippines, Australia, and New Zealand. He was a licensed private pilot who volunteered to fly donated organs for transplant and was a long-time member of the Flying Physicians Association. Bill was an avid golfer who qualified as a USGA amateur, played in many tournaments and was a proud member of Indianwood Country Club for many years. He will be missed by his family, friends, and former patients.
Rite of Committal will be at All Saints Cemetery during the Summer 2021.
