Obituary

William “Bill” Hall, 92, of Florence, South Carolina, passed away on Wednesday, April 30, 2026. Born on November 6, 1933, he was the son of the late Leon Hall and Dorothy Jean McWane Hall. Bill proudly served in the United States Air Force for four years during the Korean War. After returning home, he received a bachelor’s degree in history from Lynchburg College. On September 11, 1959, he married his devoted wife Joyce, beginning a partnership that would span more than 66 years.

His professional life reflected the same dedication he brought to everything he did. He spent more than 20 years with General Electric, moving from Virginia to Florence, SC for the opening of the new GE plant. He then worked another 20 years with Blue Cross-Blue Shield of South Carolina. After what most would call a full career, Bill was not fully ready to retire, so he worked for Assurant and then Walmart.

He had a lifelong love of learning. He was an avid reader who enjoyed reading multiple newspapers a day along with his books and magazines. His love for history continued his whole life, including Bill taking history classes at Francis Marion University after retirement. Bill was a lifelong devoted University of Virginia Cavaliers fan, often making the pilgrimage to Charlottesville for a football game. If the Cavaliers were on TV, you could count he would be watching the game and cheering them on, no matter the sport.

Bill was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Hall; daughter, Karen Nixon (Steven); granddaughters, Lauren Nixon (JT Benton) and Christine Bryant (Carsten); and his two great-grandsons, Charles and Cameron Bryant.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 5th at 12:30 pm with a memorial service to begin at 1:00 pm at Calcutt-Dowling Funeral Home located at 512 West 2nd Loop Road in Florence followed by a private committal at Florence National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Veteran Village located at 1200 E. National Cemetery Road, Florence, SC 29506, with memorandum to note for activities.
