William David Gates, 71, of Florence, SC, passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2020.  He was born in Galesburg, IL, a son of the late Russell and Betty Nicholson Gates.  Mr. Gates served in the US Army during the Vietnam War and then worked for, and retired from, the US Postal Service as a mail carrier.  After retirement, he worked as a nuclear pharmacy technician.  Mr. Gates was a Cub's fan and he served as a baseball umpire for youth groups for over 20 years.  He was an avid Redskins fan.

He is survived by two sons, David Nicholas "Nick" Gates and James Reid Gates; and one daughter, Casey Amber Gates.

Cue to COVID-19 restrictions, a private interment will take place at the Florence National Cemetery.
