Vera B. Hughes Powell, 82, of Florence, SC, passed away on Monday, October 17, 2016, at McLeod Hospice House. She was the daughter of the late Coy Tommy Byrd and Reather Byrd Conyers. She was also predeceased by her husband, Joe B. Powell; one brother, James L. Byrd and a sister, Pat Gerald. Vera attended Florence County schools and Carolina Business College. She was the Electronics Manager for K-Mart until her retirement. She attended Peace Free Will Baptist Church but she was a charter member of Christian Assembly PH Church. She is survived by her daughter, Sandy Hughes; her son, Ricky (Sherrie) Hughes; five grandchildren, Jot Rogers, Marty Rogers, Damon Rogers, Richie Hughes and Shannon Dockery; fourteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; three step children, Joseph B. (Pam) Powell, Jr., Frances Skvarek and Bridgette Marie Powell; nine step grandchildren; thirteen step great grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Blackwell, and a brother, Billy (Pat) Byrd; special sister in law, Edith Girard; and a special friend, Mary L. Plowman. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at Cain Calcutt-Stephens Funeral Home. Graveside services, directed by Cain Calcutt-Stephens Funeral Home will be held at 3 PM on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at Florence Memorial Gardens.
