Dr. Sylvester Madison, son of Rev. Samuel and Myrtle Lee Marcus Madison, and husband of the late Frances Alexander Madison, transitioned Tuesday, May 22nd at McLeod Hospice. Sylvester was born on June 26th, 1942 in Florence, South Carolina. He was a graduate of Wilson High School, North Carolina A&T University, and received his Doctorate (PhD) from the University of South Carolina. He also did extensive studies at Coastal Carolina College, Francis Marion College, Harvard University, and was accepted to Oxford University. Dr. Madison spent his working career as an educator and administrator throughout the state of South Carolina. He taught at his alma mater, Wilson High School, before transitioning into administration as assistant principal and then principal of Southside High School, also in Florence. From there, his career continued to Moore Junior High School, Rosenwald High School, Lake City Elementary School, Berkley High School, Hartsville High School, and ended at Dillon High School as well as a term as Dillon County School District Four Assistant Superintendent. In addition to his wife and parents, Dr. Madison was preceded in death by his sister, Flora Madison Moses and brothers, Dr. Levern Madison, James Madison, and Alphonso Madison. Sylvester leaves to mourn his passing: a son, Sylvester Adrian Madison of Columbia, SC; a brother, Dr. Samuel (Juanita) Madison of Decatur, GA; a devoted nephew, Andre' Madison of Florence; a devoted niece, Cornelia Moses Cain of Winston-Salem, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A private memorial service was held on Saturday, May 26, 2018, in the Chapel of Cain-Calcutt Funeral Home, per Dr. Madison's wishes.
