Susan Jane Karnuth Matthews, 78, of Florence, SC, passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2024.  She was born in Buffalo, NY, a daughter of the late Arthur Eugene Karnuth, Jr. and Jane Hambleton Karnuth.  She is also predeceased by a brother, Peter Karnuth, and a step-son, Lee Andrew Matthews.

Susan received her Masters Degree from the University of South Carolina and worked until her retirement as a school teacher in the Darlington County Schools.  She was a member of John Calvin Presbyterian Church and she volunteered at McLeod Hospital.  She loved traveling, square dancing, and was an avid reader.

Surviving is her husband of 42 years, Muncie Andrews Matthews, Jr.; step-daughter, Candace Matthews Hoffman; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Sally Summerford and Patricia Engard; a brother, Richard Allen Karnuth; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A family-led memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at John Calvin Presbyterian Church.  The family will receive friends for a visitation and reception at the church following the service.  A private Inurnment will be held in the Florence National Cemetery.  Cain Calcutt Funeral Home is honored to serve the Matthews family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Florence Area Humane Society.
