Stephen Dewey McKay, 68, of Florence, SC, passed away on Monday, September 19, 2016. He was born in Florence, a son of Thelma Galloway McKay and the late Searl Dewey McKay. He was preceded in death, in addition to his father, by a niece, Emily Prendergast. Stephen was a US Navy veteran, having served on the USS Ozark during the Vietnam War. He worked for Daniel's Construction, traveling and doing various construction jobs in many states. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, who was known for his sense of humor, and he loved cooking for others. He was a very compassionate and generous person, always helping and putting others first. He loved his family, especially his beloved grandchildren. He is survived by his mother, Thelma (George) Galloway McKay Dudley of Darlington; daughter, Missy (Dennis) McKay Riley of Gilbert; three grandchildren, Kateland, Elizabeth and John Riley; three brothers, Wayne (Connie) McKay and Edward Prendergast, both of Florence, and Michael (Sonya) Prendergast of Timmonsville; one sister, Maggie (Glenn) Kirven of Effingham; nieces, Natalie (Rhett) Phillips, Lindsey (Michael) Hughes, Allison Prendergast and Katherine Kirven; nephews, Luke (Eun Ji) Kirven and Timothy Prendergast; and his beloved canine companion, Coco. Graveside services will take place at the Florence National Cemetery at 1:00 PM on Monday, September 26, 2016. Honorary escorts will be Jody Ray, Luke Kirven, Ashley Walker, Timothy Prendergast, Rhett Phillips and Brian Larrimore. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, October 15, 2016 in the chapel of Cain Calcutt-Stephens Funeral Home.
