Shirley Grant McKnight Cruickshank, of Florence, S. C., passed away at the Presbyterian Community in Florence, S. C. on March 1, 2017, at the age of 86 years old. She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, George W. Cruickshank of Florence, SC; her mother and father, Mercy Grant McKnight and William Kirk McKnight, of Providence, Rhode Island; and by her brothers, William (Scotty) McKnight and Peter McKnight (Joan-Sandra McKnight). Surviving are her daughters, Cindy Johnson (Richard) and Susan Breeden (Kennedy), both of Florence, SC; her grandsons, Chris Johnson (Jessica), Ian Johnson, and Harrison Breeden, all of Florence, S. C.; her step grandchildren, Mary Susan Barfield (Ron) of Latta, S. C. and William (Will) K Breeden, III (Wendy) of Indianapolis, Indiana; along with several great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Shirley was born on June 7, 1931 in Providence, Rhode Island. She graduated from elementary and secondary schools in Providence, Rhode Island. In 1955, she married George Walter Cruickshank of Providence, Rhode Island. Shirley and George made their home in Florence, S. C., during George's thirty year career with Dupont. In 1960, after moving to Florence, SC, with George for DuPont, Shirley began an active servant leadership tenure at First Presbyterian Church, where she as a Stephens Minister, a bible study leader, a Sunday school teacher, and a chairperson for the First Presbyterian prayer chain. Shirley was a loyal member of the Presbyterian Women and was awarded an Honorary Life Membership. Shirley lived her life for her family and for her service to others, especially in her service work at First Presbyterian Church, which she actively shared in and participated in with her husband, George, for 56 years. The Cruickshank family would like to express their sincere thanks and gratitude to the caring, compassionate and extraordinary care provided to Shirley by the wonderful staff at the Florence Presbyterian Community. A private graveside service, directed by Cain-Calcutt-Stephens Funeral Home, will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, March 6, 2017, at the Florence National Cemetery. A memorial service, directed by Cain-Calcutt-Stephens Funeral Home, will follow at 1:00 PM at the Chapel of the Florence Presbyterian Community, with a reception at the Florence Presbyterian Community, immediately following the service in the Chapel.
