Sally, born on February 8, 1955, in what was then the British Protectorate of Aden, is the cherished daughter of RAF (retired) Squadron Leader GR Grom and Dorothy Spaven Groom. She grew up surrounded by a family that instilled in her values of service, love, and community-principles she carried throughout her life.
Sally shared a remarkable journey with her beloved husband, Charles E. Courtney Jr., whom she married on December 16, 1973, in Florence. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter for 47 wonderful years until Charles’s passing in 2021. Their union was blessed with two children, Arin Blue Smith and Lt. Colonel Charles E. Courtney, III, who, alongside their spouses Daniel and Kristyn, brought immense joy to their lives.
A devoted grandmother, Sally’s heart was filled with pride and love for her six grandchildren: Fisher, Drake, Kaila, Madelyn, Beatrix, and Oliver. Her family was her greatest treasure, and she cherished every moment with them.
Sally’s career as a property developer with Charles around Florence was marked by dedication and success. Together, they transformed landscapes and communities, leaving a legacy that will endure through the spaces they created.
Her passion for gardening was well-known, and Sally spent countless hours tending to her garden, nurturing a vibrant array of flowers and vegetables. This love for nature was a reflection of her nurturing spirit, which was evident in all her relationships and interactions.
Sally’s kindness and generosity were hallmarks of her character. She touched the lives of many, offering support and compassion wherever it was needed. Her capacity to give of herself was a gift to all who knew her.
She is survived by her dear siblings, Elizabeth G. Stevens, Janet Groom Dubose and her husband, James, of Florence, and John Groom and his wife, Heather, of New Zealand. Her fiancé, Pat Price, holds a special place in her heart; along with her beloved Basset Hound, Shadow, who brought her great comfort and companionship.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Stacey Galloway, RN with Agape Hospice and the dedicated staff on the 5th floor of MUSC, Florence. For their unwavering support and care.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 12:00 Noon on Saturday, September 19, 2026 at Calcutt-Dowling Funeral Home.
Sally’s memory will be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to know her. In her honor, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice, continuing her legacy of generosity and kindness. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you plant a tree in her memory.
