Obituary

Ruth Celine Riley Gutshall entered the gates of Heaven on May 11th. She was a native of West Virginia and resided in Elkins, WV, until moving to Florence, SC, in 1990 to be closer to her children and grandchildren. She was married to Louie Ellis Gutshall, who preceded her in death. She was a coal miner's daughter who married a coal miner's son. From the humble beginnings came a strong faith in God, a love and commitment to family, and a work ethic evident in every endeavor. Ruth was a devoted wife and mother. Her most cherished role was "Mom Mom" to her grandchildren. Ruth and Louie instilled a sense of giving, which was demonstrated by their generosity to those in need. They quietly provided food, clothing, and assistance to many. They emphasized this to their children and grandchildren, a legacy which will be carried on. Ruth was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church (Florence) and was a longtime member of St. Brendan's Catholic Church (Elkins, WV). Ruth enjoyed spending time with her family, working in her yard and flower gardens, reading, and doing crossword puzzles. She is survived by her daughters Susan Bennett of Florence, SC, and Monica "Molly" Harner (Harry) of Charlotte, NC. Her grandchildren were the lights of her life: Erin Bennett Deery (Shawn) of Columbia, SC, Zachary Riley Harner and Samuel Morgan Harner, Charlotte, NC. In addition, she is survived by her brother Joseph Riley (June) of Reading, PA, and her in-laws whom she regarded as sisters/brother: Mary Gutshall Skinner, Martha Gutshall Tallman (Ray), and Margaret Gutshall . She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, many of whom refer to her as "favorite aunt"; she made everyone feel like her favorite. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents Vincent and Veronica Riley, her in-laws Ellis M. and Louvilla Gutshall, 3 brothers (Robert Riley, Cyril Vincent Riley, and Philip Edward Riley) and 2 sisters (Rita Riley McGraw and Mary Riley Nuckols). Also preceding here in death were Lou Eslinger, Mervin Gutshall (Rena), Neil Gutshall (Judy), Mervin Gutshall, and Bob Skinner. "Mom Mom"/"Miss Ruth" had a special bond with her friends at Taylor Garden Shop and her buddies at Harris Teeter - who doted on her after Louie's passing. A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 15th, at 11:00 a.m. at the Florence National Cemetery, directed by Cain-Calcutt-Stephens Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to: Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (www.jdrf.org; JDRF 26 Broadway, 14th Floor, New York, NY 10004); Greater Florence Habitat for Humanity (www.florencehabitat.com; 612-B South Irby St., Florence, SC 29501). This chapter is building a home for Mike Mouzon, an angel on earth. The family would like to thank Dr. Mark Steadman for his care and kindness; Ruth adored him.
