Obituary

Ruth Gibson Graham, wife of Lawrence (Larry) Graham, passed away Monday September 14, 2009 at McLeod Hospice House. Ruth Jean Gibson was born, September 27, 1923 in Red Oak, IA, to Russell and Ruby Clements Gibson. She graduated from Shenandoah High School in Shenandoah, Iowa in 1940, where she was Senior Class President, Homecoming Queen and voted Most Representative Student. Ruth graduated from Tarkio College in Tarkio, Missouri in 1944, majoring in English and Business Education. During the summer of 1943, Ruth worked in a small arms ammunition plant in St. Louis. After college she taught Business and English at Stanton High School in Stanton, Iowa. During her freshman year at Tarkio, Ruth met Larry Graham and they were married on May 25, 1946 in Portland, Oregon where Larry's ship returned after duty in the Pacific in World War II. Ruth was a proud 50 Year Member of The PEO Sisterhood in Clinton, IA, Nashville, TN, Richmond, VA and most recently with her beloved sisters of Chapter N in Florence. She also belonged to the Samuel Bacot Chapter of D.A.R. and was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Florence where she was involved with Church Circle and Women of the Church. She was a long time hospital volunteer in Florence at Bruce and Carolina Hospitals. Some of her favorite memories were the many Mondays she spent with her quilting group in Florence. Her kind manner touched many, many people. Ruth is survived by her husband of 63 years, Larry Graham and her three sons, - Stephen (Ann) of Bronxville, NY, James (Lois) of Carmel, IN and Robert of Charlottesville, VA; and five granddaughters and one grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother and sister. Visitation with the family will be at Cain Funeral Home Wednesday September 16th from 6:00-8:00PM and at other times at the family residence. The funeral service will be Thursday September 17th at 11:00AM in the First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in the family plot in Red Oak, Iowa at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to American Cancer Society, 950 48th Ave. D., Myrtle Beach, SC 29577 or First Presbyterian Church, 700 Park Avenue, Florence, SC 2950, The PEO Sisterhood, Chapter N or the charity of one's choice. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of McLeod Hospice House for their exceptional and loving care given to Ruth during her stay.
