Obituary

Robert Guy Hill, born in Florence, South Carolina September 27, 1932, passed away on July 28, 2011 surrounded by his family. He was a graduate of Florence High School in 1951, where he played varsity football with his team winning the State Championship his senior year. Guy was a graduate of Clemson University in 1955 where he earned a degree in Ceramic Engineering. While at Clemson, he was a distinguished member of the Regimental Staff of the Military College, as well as the Pershing Rifle Drill Team. After graduation, he served in the U. S. Army as a second lieutenant in the Signal Corp. His training took place at the Fort Monmouth Signal Corp School in New Jersey. After successful completion of his training, he received his first lieutenant bars while stationed at Fort Gordon, Georgia. After serving two years in the military, he began his professional career as the senior Ceramic Engineer with Mid State Tile in Lexington, North Carolina. Later, he joined the family business in Florence, South Carolina as an owner and president of Florence Iron & Steel. Guy served faithfully as a deacon and Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church in Florence until he and his wife moved to Aiken to expand his career in ceramic engineering as a management recruiter for the engineering profession. Guy was actively involved in community service as a member of Lions International, the Kiwanis Club, and the Terrific Kids Program. After retiring, he and his wife, Mary Louise, returned to Florence to be closer to their family. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Louise Rodrigue Hill, and his daughters Diane Hill Perry and husband Dr. L.R. Perry, Jr., Susan Hill Oxner and husband Donald Edwin Oxner, both of Florence, and his grandchildren: Anna Truluck Perry, Louis Tyler Perry, Margaret Wicker Perry, Whitney Michelle Oxner, Jennifer Nicole Oxner; his sister Tyler Hill Hamrick and her husband Dr. Phillip J. Hamrick, Jr., and many loving nieces and nephews. Guy is predeceased by his parents Theo Tyler Hill and Lucius Gordon Hill, Sr. and brothers Lt. General Lucius Gordon Hill, Jr. and William Ray Hill. Services will be held Sunday at First Baptist Church in Florence, SC at 3:00 PM. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Cain Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to First Baptist Church of Florence at 300 S. Irby Street, Florence, South Carolina 29501.
