Richard Strout Osward, 83, of Charlotte, NC, and Florence, SC, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. Born in Brockton, MA, he was the son of the late Carl Elon Osward and Sybil Elizabeth Strout Osward. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Susan Hodgson Osward; his brother, Karl Elon Osward; and his sister, Janet Marilyn Jacquemart.
Richard honorably served his country for 20 years in the U.S. Marine Corps, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. His distinguished service included two tours in Vietnam, one aboard the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany. As an original member of VMA-513, he was proud to participate in the testing program for the Harrier Jet.
Following his military service, Richard embarked on a successful 22-year career with the National Gypsum Company, culminating in his role as plant manager at the East Greenbush, NY, facility.
Richard had a passion for traveling, playing cards and board games, and spending time on the water. Whether fishing, boating, or hosting backyard barbecues by the family pool, he cherished moments with his children and grandchildren. As a pillar of his extended family, he was known for providing keen insight and steadfast support to those in need.
Richard is survived by his children: Karl Ian Osward (Denise) of Leland, NC; Richard Dean Osward of Florence, SC; Charles Kevin Osward (Sue) of Charlotte, NC; Christopher Chandler (Shannon) of Lake Tahoe, CA; Jenna Lisella (Joe) of Springfield, MA; and Alison Chandler of Albany, NY. He also leaves behind his sister, Cheryl Cerasulo (Vincent) of Medford, MA; his brother, Alfred "Al" Osward (Mary) of Holbrook, MA; grandchildren: Jessica Osward, Alyssa Osward, Luke Richard Osward, Joseph LoCasio, Sierra Lisella, Devin Chandler, Olive Chandler, Molly Conaway, Zoey Conaway, and Natalie Conaway; two great-grandchildren; his former spouse, Marian Millar Osward; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Richard will be interred beside his beloved wife, Susan, at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY. A memorial service will be held in New York at a later date. Cain Calcutt Funeral Home is honored to serve the Osward Family.
