Phyllis "Bobbye" Corbin FLORENCE Phyllis "Bobbye" Corbin died on December 1, 2010. Bobbye's husband of 52 years, Ruel "Mike" Corbin, and her eldest son, Larry, predeceased her. Bobbye and Mike had a daughter (Debbie Jelonek-Farmer) and 3 sons, Larry, Daryl, and Rodney from Florence. Bobbye has 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren residing in Virginia and South Carolina. Bobbye had a brother, Eldridge "Pete" Powell, who predeceased her, 2 sisters, Mary P. Glenn and Pat P. Kale, residing in Florence, and numerous nieces, nephews, and relatives in Iowa and South Carolina. Bobbye, born on February 14, 1928, was raised in Shiminally near Indiantown and attended school in Pamplico. When Bobbye was a teenager, a girlfriend and she bought a car and headed towards Hollywood. Bobbye got an advertising job as a "cigarette girl" and fashion model in Corpus Christi, Texas, where she was named "best dressed." In 1944, Bobbye met Mike, a young sailor stationed at Corpus Christi Naval Base, whom she and they married in 1946. After World War II, Bobbye and Mike moved to Iowa to work on a family farm and raise children. Bobbye also became a top sales producer for a company called Cinderella, International, an early version of Avon. In 1966, the Corbin family made Florence home where Bobbye raised 4 children and worked in the restaurant and hospitality industry, beginning as restaurant manager of the Charcoal Hearth Restaurant in the Downtown Holiday Inn owned and operated by Jack Orr ("Jack"), founder of the Orr Company. Colonel Harland Sanders visited Bobbye and Jack at the Charcoal Hearth Restaurant and fried them chicken with "secret spices" called Kentucky Fried Chicken ("KFC"). Jack became an early KFC franchisee, Bobbye managed Jack's KFC restaurant, and Colonel Sanders personally presented to them many coveted "White Glove Awards" for several consecutive years. Later, Bobbye became the Banquet Captain for the Florence Ramada Inn. In 1991, Bobbye won the worldwide hotel chain's most prestigious "National Hospitality Person of the Year Award" over more than 17,000 competitors. Some of Bobbye's famous Ramada Inn banquet clients who requested her individual service were Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, and Richard Petty. During retirement years, Bobbye was a devoted servant of the Lord, feeding and clothing homeless people and destitute families. Bobbye loved volunteering for food bank and cooking duties at Gospel Light Bible Church whose founder was her eldest son, Pastor Larry Corbin. Bobbye's gentle nature, positive attitude, and inner strength made everyone around her feel better. Children would stop crying in her arms. Cain Funeral Home at 512 West Second Loop Road will handle burial arrangements and host family visitation on Sunday (December 5th) between 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Bobbye's 10:00 a.m. funeral service, on Monday (December 6th) at Gospel Temple Worship Center, 3987 West Palmetto Street, precedes the 11:00 a.m. graveside ceremony at The National Cemetery on National Cemetery Road. Please donate to the Salvation Army or a church in Bobbye's memory.
