FLORENCE, SC Owen Mitchel Martin, Jr., 73, of Florence, died Friday, February 22, 2013 in Florence, SC. He was born December 29, 1939 in Mullins, SC to the late Owen Mitchel and Lucille Brickle Martin, Sr. Mitchel was an honor graduate of Mullins High School and a 1962 distinguished military graduate of Clemson College, where he majored in Mechanical Engineering. He served in the United States Army Infantry, served two tours of duty in Viet Nam, and received numerous commendations including the Bronze Star. Mitchel taught ROTC at Clemson and received his Master's Degree in Industrial Management there in 1971. He was the Physical Plant Director at Francis Marion College/University from 1971 until he retired in 2003. Mitchel was a former member of Highland Park United Methodist Church, a Boy Scout leader, and a member of round dancing and square dancing clubs. Survivors include his wife, Helen Stewart Martin of Florence; son Stephen (Jennifer) Martin of Blackfoot, ID; daughter Katherine Martin Bryant of Powdersville, SC; and grandchildren Connor Stock Martin, Liam Stewart Martin, Samantha Nicole Bryant and Megan Kathleen Bryant. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm Thursday, February 28, 2013, at Cain Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Florence National Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday prior to the service from 12:00 - 1:00 pm at Cain Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Francis Marion University Scholarship Fund.
