Obituary

Olin K. McDaniel, Jr, 89, of Florence, SC passed away Thursday, November, 20, 2014, at a local hospital after an illness. Olin was the son of the late Olin K. McDaniel, Sr. and Madeline Truesdale McDaniel. After living his early childhood in Pageland, SC, they moved to Beaufort, SC in 1934 where he graduated from high school in 1941. He attended Clemson the next two years, enlisted in the US Navy, was sent to Georgia Tech in the Navy V-12 program, and graduated from Georgia Tech in late 1944. From there he was sent to Midshipman school at the US Naval Academy, graduated and was commissioned as Ensign in early 1945.Upon release from active duty late 1946, he began work at Union Bag & Paper Co. in Savannah, GA where he met his wife, Eunice DeLeGal. They were married in 1948 and had two children. He remained in the Active Naval Reserves over a total of 30 years, several of which were served back on Active Duty upon recall during the Korean Conflict. He then transferred to the Retired Reserves as Commander, USNR in 1973. His professional employment including the first 8 years with Union Bag in Savannah, and the following 31 years with the DuPont Company at several locations around the country with eventual retirement from them in 1985, in Florence. He remained an avid and active fisherman and hunter from his early years in Beaufort, throughout much of his life. In addition, he was extremely interested in Ham radio from his early adulthood, plus building and flying radio controlled model aircraft, and later became very active in wildlife photography, until the end. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Eunice McDaniel of Florence, a son, Olin K. McDaniel, III, of Modesto, CA, a daughter, Mary (David) McDaniel White, a granddaughter, Mary Kimberly White of Albuquerque, NM, as well as many cousins, nieces, and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Elizabeth McDaniel Wilson of Corpus Christi, TX. Following cremation, his remains will be interred next to those of his parents in the St. Helena Episcopal Church cemetery in Beaufort, SC.
