Obituary

Myers Hampton Hicks FLORENCE - Myers Hampton Hicks, Physician, and civic leader, died in Florence on November 2012 at age 90. He was born in Florence on January 29, 1922, the son of Elijah maxie Hicks and Jessie Bryant Hicks. After graduating from Florence High School in 1939, he attended Furman Univ. on a football scholarship He left Furman in 1942 to attend Univ. of Va. from which he received a B.S. degree, and a M. D. degree. He interned at Duke Univ and did residency at Univ of Va. finishing his study's by 1950. He practiced Internal Medicine until 1988. He was a Fellow in the American College of Physicians. He served terms as Chief of staff at McLeod Memorial and Florence General hospitals. After retiring from practice, he started Mercy Medicine Clinic and contiued to treat those in need of medical services who could not afford care. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church since 1946. Served as a Sunday School teacher for 60 years. Recieved the Zoulean Anderson Award for Bible teaching. Served his church in many offices including Service on a General assembly committee and as Choir member. Served as Director of Lay renewal Ministries for Presbyterians for Renewal for 8 years. He served his communitee and pres. of the Rotary Club, Habitat for Humaity, and Lead the fiancial campaign for the Florence Family YMCA He is survived by his wife, Edith McEachern Hicks whom he married on Nov 17, 1945 and their 6 children; Rachel (Jim) Crosby, Dan (Cissy) Hicks, David (Elizabeth) Hicks, Ken (Tina) Hicks, Martha (Bob) Chastain, and Glenn (Diane) Hicks; and 14 grandchildren, and 50 great and great-great grandchildren. He enjoyed golf, tennis, Bible study and being with family. He has said that his claim to fame was being a child of the King and knowing that Heaven is his home. Funeral Services will be at 11 a. m. on Monday November 5, 2012, at First Presbyterian Church in Florence. The family will receive friends at the home 6 -8 p.m. Sunday night.
