Milton, G. Gessert, 81, of Florence, S.C., died Sunday, August 4, 2013 at Carolina's Hospital System in Florence. He was born in Fond du Lac, WI, a son of the late Milton W. and Martha Meyer Gessert. Milton is predeceased by his parents and his wife, Gloria M. Gessert who passed away in 2008. He was educated in Fond du Lac and went on to the University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI, graduating in 1954 where he earned a BA degree. On June 20, 1954 he married Gloria M. Hills. He joined The Kroger Co. as a management trainee. Later he spent two years as an officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers before returning to Kroger to continue his career in Personnel/Human Resources. After 35 years, he retired from Kroger and moved to the Florence area and was employed as the Director of Human Resources for Coleman Co. in Lake City, S.C. He retired in 1997. While in Florence, Milton was very active in many organizations such as the Pee Dee Industry Council, United Way, South Carolina Rehabilitation Board, etc. As members of Incarnate Word Lutheran Church, both he and his wife were very active and Milton held most of the church officer positions. He is survived by one daughter, Lyn G. Gessert-Nograsek(Jerry) of Huntersville, N.C.; two sons, James "Jim" M. Gessert and Jay M. Gessert, both of Florence, S.C.; one granddaughter, C. Joy Gessert of Huntersville, N.C. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 8, 2013 at 12:00 Noon at St. Luke Lutheran Church. The family will receive friends from 10:30 A.M to 12:00 prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in Florence National Cemetery with military honors directed by Cain Funeral Home.
