Melvin Oscar Anderson, 89, of Effingham, S.C., went to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, October 22, 2012 at McLeod Hospice House in Florence, S.C. He was born in Aurora, WI, a son of the late Fred David and Esther Johnson Anderson. He served in the Army in Germany during World War II. His career was as a general contractor building custom homes, churches, and commercial properties. The building project that was his greatest joy was a home and school for the mentally handicapped, Shepherd's Ministries, in Union Grove, WI. He was one of its founders and served as Vice President. He also served on the Board of Hiawatha Baptist Missions and in retirement took missions trips to help with building projects. He spent his career in Milwaukee, WI, and 25 years of retirement in Clearwater, FL. He moved to Effingham, S.C. to be near his family two months prior to his death. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Doris Maki Anderson of Effingham, S.C.; one daughter, Carol Jean "Jeannie" Brown and her husband Spencer of Cincinnati, Ohio; one son Stephen C. "Steve" Anderson and his wife Betty of Effingham, S.C.; three grandsons, Mark (Lesa) Anderson, Nathan (Amy) Brown and Matthew (Jacqueline) Brown; 8 grandchildren; and his brother Vernon (Lucille) Anderson. He was preceded in death by his two sisters, Eileen and Carol. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. at Berean Baptist Church, 2450 S. Center Road in Darlington County, S.C. There will be a second Memorial Service in Iron Mountain, MI at First Covenant Church on Saturday November 3, 2012 at 1:00 P.M. with internment to follow. Memorials may be made to Shepherd's Ministries, 1805 15th Avenue, Union Grove, WI 53182.
