Obituary

A graveside service for Mrs. Mary Stroup Scott Hand, will be at 2PM, Saturday March 13, 2010 in Rose Hill Cemetery in York, SC, conducted by the Rev. Will Malambri. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the McLeod Hospice House PO Box 100551 Florence, SC 29502-0551 or www.mcleodfoundation.org or The Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee 2100 Twin Church Florence, SC 29501. Mrs. Hand, 84, died peacefully March 6, 2010, in a local healthcare facility. She was born April 4, 1925, in York, SC, to the late James Ernest and Reola Quinn Stroup, Jr. She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, John Kuykendal Scott Jr., and beloved second husband, Aquilla M. Hand. She was an active member of ARP Church in York, SC, as well as Central United Methodist Church in Florence, SC. Mrs. Hand was also a member of DAR, and the Wildewood Garden Club in Florence. She was a graduate of Winthrop University with a degree in social work, and attended William and Mary in Virginia for graduate school. Following her schooling she was an employee of the South Carolina Department of Social Services in York, and Columbia for 30 years, mainly in the area of adoptions. Her many treasured hobbies included bridge club, knitting, Bible study at Central, geneology, and most of all travel, which she did extensively and that gave her much joy and life long friendships. Survivors include: daughter, Quinnie S. (Woody) Jones of Florence; son, John Kuykendal Scott III of Hilton Head Island; grandchildren, Euel Durwood Jones III, and John Kuykendal Scott IV both of Columbia; and best friend and caregiver, Diane Jackson.
