Greenwood, SC Mary Jo Russ, 84, of Greenwood. SC, formerly of Florence, SC, passed away on Saturday, January 18, 2014 in the Hospice Care of the Piedmont. Mary Jo was born in Atkinson, NC, a daughter of the late Edison William and Josephine Rilee Horrell. In addition to her parents, Mary Jo is predeceased by husband of 57 years, Walter Russ, and six brothers and sisters. Mary Jo was a devoted wife, mother, kindergarten teacher and artist. She was active in the Florence Art Association and other community activities. She also lived out her strong faith by committing her time and heart to discipleship of a multitude of young Christian women over a 30 year period. She was committed to building love and faith into their lives. She trained, encouraged, counseled and loved them with wisdom and heart-felt concern and care. This was her principle mission later in life. Through God's grace and strength, Mary Jo leaves a legacy that has blessed and enriched many lives which will live on into eternity. She loved Jesus and is now in His joyful Sabbath rest forever. Mary Jo is survived by her son, David Wayne (Betsy Lyn) Russ of Greenwood, SC; and a sister, Doris Tant of Tallahassee, FL. A funeral service is scheduled for 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at The Church at King Avenue, 800 King Avenue, Florence, SC, directed by Cain Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 9:30 until 11:00 AM at the church prior to the service. Committal service will follow at Mount Hope Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Care of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Ave., Greenwood, SC, 29646, or Hospice House of Florence, 1203 E. Cheves Street, Florence, SC, 29506.
