A graveside service for Mary Grace Grady will be at 11:00AM Saturday, October 11, 2008, in Maplewood Cemetery, Kinston, NC. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society, 1007 Stockade Dr., Florence, SC 29506. Ms. Grady will be taken from Cain Funeral Home to Howard-Carter Funeral Home, Kinston, NC. Ms. Grady, died Wednesday, October 8, 2008, in Carolinas Hospital System. She was the daughter of the late Joseph Clarence and Venetia Grady, Sr. Grace was a 1951 graduate of The Women's College of North Carolina, now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She also attended the University of Houston for post graduate studies. After graduating from college she was employed by the Girl Scout Council in Richmond, Virginia as a field advisor. She moved from Richmond to the Girl Scout Council in Houston, Texas and served as director for the summer camp program for several years. Ms. Grady moved back to North Carolina and worked for the Girl Scout Council of Coastal Carolina as a field director. In 1966 she moved to Florence to become the Executive Director of the Girl Scout Council of the Pee Dee Area where she was employed until her retirement in 1991. Grace was a life member of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America, a member of the Altrusa Club, Invesisters, and became a Guardian Ad Litem volunteer after her retirement. She was awarded the Thanks Badge which is the highest award given by a board of directors to an adult Girl Scout. In 1991 she was awarded the Order of the Palmetto by the Governor of South Carolina, Carroll Campbell. This is the highest award for a citizen of South Carolina, and she was officially named a Palmetto Lady. Ms. Grady is survived by a brother and his wife, Joseph and Liz Grady, Jr.; a niece, Mary Susan Grady; nephew, David Whitfield and his children Skyler and David Whittfield, Jr.; great-nieces, Melissa Byrd and her child, Joseph Byrd and Krystal Coley and her child, Michael Tyler. Grace also leaves two loving dear friends, Patricia Vincent and Ida Jordan.
