Mary Williams Gallagher, 91, formerly of Florence, SC, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 16, 2012, at the Levine & Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, NC, after a brief illness. She was born in Emporia, VA, to the late Jesse and Cora Williams, the 9th of 12 children. Survivors include her daughters, Marge Wiggins of Concord, NC, and Chris Wallace and husband, David, of Mechanicsburg, PA; one sister, Virginia Shuttlesworth of CA; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews and countless friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Edward J. Gallagher, and one grandchild. Mary was the owner/operator of the Package Shop on Pamplico Hwy for many years. She sold the store and retired at the age of 77, and subsequently moved to a retirement community in Charlotte, NC, to be near her daughter. Despite a severe hearing loss and macular degeneration in her later years, Mary was meticulous about her appearance and continued to dress beautifully and wear full make-up and jewelry right up until her recent illness. Upon learning of her demise, someone at the retirement community where she lived commented, "Mary was a classy lady." And that she was. Mary will be deeply missed by her family and many friends, but "take heart, absent from the body is present with the Lord." 2 Corinthians 5:8. "Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter thou into the joy of the Lord." Matthew 25:23. Services will take place on Tuesday, June 26, 2012, at 1:00 PM, at Cain Funeral Home, 512 West Second Loop Rd., Florence, SC, with burial to follow at Florence National Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those wishing to honor Mary do so by charitable donations to organizations that assist children and/or animals in distressed situations or by random acts of kindness to someone in need.
