Obituary

Lynette Frances Ray Griffin, age 84, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 28 th , 2026 in Florence SC.

She was born at home on August 28, 1941, in Houma, LA. She graduated from Terrebonne High School where she was head majorette and queen of a Mardi Gras ball. She attended Nicholls State University where she met future husband, Toby Griffin. They both had a love of dancing that they passed on to their children. Ahead of the trend, they were thrown out of a dance for doing “The Twist”. They married in Wareham, MA. Lynette was a wonderful Room Mom, Hot Dog Lady and PTA vice-president and president during the years her children attended St. John’s Catholic school. She was the biggest cheerleader to her children and always attended their various school functions, sports and other activities.

She had several businesses working from home, but our favorite was when she and the neighborhood moms made puppet “goony birds”. This involved more than the moms; it was really a family effort to make all the parts and construct the puppets. Her children tell numerous stories of her embarrassing them when dropping them off at school by rolling down the window and yelling “I love you! and blowing kisses, then “catching a wheel” as she drove off. When riding in the passenger seat, she would honk the car horn and duck down, making it appear that one of us was the culprit. Music filled their home as Lynette loved to sing songs from musicals and other popular songs of her generation. The songs from Oklahoma, West Side Story, and South Pacific, the music of Harry Belafonte, Elvis and popular songs of the ‘50’s and 60’s were often heard.

She knew people everywhere we went and half the time was related to them. This is a trait her daughters have inherited, much to the amazement of her grandchildren. She had, what she called the “Wanderlust” as we went on many one-day road trips. Trips to Civil War forts, others just long rides down back roads, around neighborhoods to look at flowers and through many small-town Main streets throughout the South. After she retired, she became the passenger on many of these trips, as her driving became similar to a carnival ride! On those later rides, she would instruct you to “turn down this street” and take you to a beautiful neighborhood, park or random mural in a small town that she had found years ago!

Lynette loved to work in her yard and could often be seen with flowers in her hair when she came in from an afternoon of gardening. From her years in Alanon, she loved butterflies. She was much the butterfly herself, touching those who knew her with dabs of colorful happiness and flying to the beat of her own happy heart. Her room was decorated with many butterflies, and her blankets were covered in them. She taught her children lessons in independence and to be able to do things for themselves. One of those lessons was to let her children paint their bedrooms. They had to do the painting themselves and live with the color choice.

She enjoyed being in Toast Masters and learning to speak in public. She joined the Civil Service in the 80’s to work at the Charleston Naval Shipyard and Warner Robins AFB as a supply clerk.

Lynette is survived by her children Anne Marie Frix, Kathy McCoy, Mark Griffin, Suzy Paul (Jon); grandchildren Brittany Wogamon (Brandon), Brandon Paul, Brooklyn Hill (Austin), Tyler Frix, and Kyle Frix; great-granddaughter Sage Wogamon; siblings Nell Ray, Hartley “Podna” Ray, Jr. (Jane), Nancy Hatch; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Lynette was predeceased by her parents Hartley Ray, Sr and Nellie Boudreaux Ray, her sister Dolores Ray Dupre, her brothers-in-law Reynold Dupre and Bernard “Butch” Hatch, Jr. and son-in-law Jack McCoy.
