Julia Porcher Wickham Porter Stallings died peacefully in her sleep on March 16, 2026 in Florence, SC. Julia was born on March 26, 1942 to the late Dr. Charles W. Porter III and Julia Porcher Wickham Porter and spent her girlhood in Evanston, IL, Bethesda, MD, and Richmond, VA. She graduated from the National Cathedral School in 1960 and attended Sweet Briar College and Ohio University. She married Dr. Lelan Stallings of Carbondale, IL in 1983. He preceded her in death in 2011.

Julia lived in Carbondale, IL for most of her adult life. She worked at the Carbondale Public Library, as well as occasionally at her husband’s ophthalmology practice. She was known for her commitment to life-long learning, her optimistic enthusiasms, and her generous nature. She collected antique toy trains, and had an interest in physics and astronomy. She enjoyed traveling with her family and friends to many places including New Zealand, England (particularly London), Egypt, China, France, and Italy.

Julia began running competitively after turning 50 and completed multiple marathons including ones in Memphis and New Orleans. She participated in a running and walking group in Carbondale for many years. She played tennis and enjoyed attending professional tennis events with friends. Julia inspired many people (old and young) to stay active.

Julia was also preceded in death by her daughter, Dr. Julia PWP Capewell in 2022.

Julia is survived by her son, Dr. Roy Catesby Flannagan III (Beckie) of Florence, SC; her beloved grandson Wickham Catesby Flannagan (Alev) of Ankara, Turkey; and her great grandson Atlas Catesby Flannagan, also of Ankara, Turkey.

A memorial service for Julia Stallings will be held at a later date.
