Obituary

A memorial service for John Allan Gray, husband of Donna White Gray will be 3:00PM Friday October 19, 2007 in the Presbyterian Community Chapel. Inurnment with full military honors will be April, 25, 2008 in Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Presbyterian Community, 2350 Lucas Street, Florence, SC 29501. Cain Funeral Home is assisting the family. Mr. Gray , 83, a retired administrative law judge with the US Department of Labor, died Wednesday, October 17, 2007 in McLeod Hospice House from complications related to Alzheimer's disease. Judge Gray was born to Scottish immigrants in North Arlington, NJ. He joined the US Army Air Force immediately after his graduation from Kearny High School in 1943. He was inducted into their the Hall of Fame in 1996. He served as a B-24 Pathfinder Navigator with the 44th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force, stationed at Shipdham Field, England from 1944 until the end of the war in Europe in 1945. His decorations included the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and Distinguished Unit Citation. In 1949, he graduated from Penn State University where he distinguished himself with the football and track teams. He joined the FBI, as a special agent, in 1951 after graduating from George Washington University Law School. He worked with the FBI in Kansas City and Chicago before returning to the DC area in 1954. Judge Gray lived in Springfield, VA from 1954 to 1985. He was an agent with FBI from 1951 to 1963 and a deputy regional director with the Federal Trade Commission from 1963 until 1978. He was named an administrative law judge with Labor's Employment Standards Administration in 1978. He adjudicated issues related to the Black Lung Benefits Act until his retirement in 1996. He received the department's distinguished service award when he retired. In 1985, he moved to Wilmington, NC and later to Florence, SC. Judge Gray was a member of the Springfield Golf and Country Club where he was an avid tennis player. His other interests included teaching Sunday School at Grace Presbyterian Church and coaching Little League baseball teams in Springfield. In Wilmington, he served on the Session of Windemere Presbyterian Church. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are: children, James Gray of Springfield, VA and Lynn Phelps of Albany, NY; stepchildren, Scott (Angela) O'Brien, of Myrtle Beach, Michael O'Brien of Florence, and Heather (Jeffrey B.) Coggin of Charleston; sister, Mary Gray of Florence; and five grandchildren. The family wishes to express their deepest thanks to the caregivers of the Presbyterian Community in Florence, Dr. Donald Behling, a dedicated physician, Levon Jones, who lovingly cared for John the past year and the staff of the McLeod Hospice House.
