Obituary

CW04 (Retired) John Emory Floyd Sr. died at home in Florence, SC. Mr. Floyd was 87 years old. Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Eugenia (Jean Roberts Floyd), his son John E. Floyd Jr. (wife- Karen) of Florence, daughters Jane F. Zenger of Blythewood and Jeannie Marie Harris of Darlington (husbands- Steve and Michael). He has six grandchildren; Victoria Singletary, Clark Floyd, Kathryn and Jay Zenger and Christopher and Courtney Harris. He was one of five children and was born in Sumter but grew up in Florence and Aynor, SC. In September 1947, John married Jean Roberts, his high school classmate. Mr. Floyd was a highly decorated World War II Veteran. At age 18 he enlisted in the Army completing basic and advanced combat training in Texas and was sent for service in North Africa and Italy where he served from the south of Casino to the northern border of Italy being awarded three battle stars. After only three months in combat he earned the rank of Staff Sgt. and squad leader. Shortly after this, he was promoted to First Sgt. At age 19, he was written up in the "Stars and Stripes" as the youngest First Sergeant in the Italian campaign. During his service in Italy, he received many medals including two Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts, the French Croix de Guerre and the Combat Infantry Badge. In April 1947 he helped reorganize the Infantry Company in the Florence National Guard unit and was later promoted to Chief Warrant Officer 4. He served in the SC National Guard until November 1980 and received the US Army Meritorious Medal, the US Army Commendation Medal and the SC National Guard Meritorious Medal. In 2009, he was inducted into the SC Warrant Officer Hall of Fame at Ft. Jackson, Columbia, SC. For his many years of civic work he was awarded the "Key to the City" of Florence when he retired. Mr. Floyd was a life member of the Masons, Mecca Lodge #407 and was a Shiner. In his earlier years he was an active Boy Scouts leader and a member of the Elks. He and his wife Jean are long- time members of Calvary Baptist Church where he was the secretary of his Sunday school class for many years. Memorials may be made to charity of one's choice. The family wishes to thank Harmony Care Hospice and special family care giver Ms. Wanda Jackson for their love and care. Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Tuesday July 31, 2012 at Cain Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends 3:00-4:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.
