"Bob" Mcdonald, Jr.
October 16, 1948 – February 8, 2025
John Robert "Bob" McDonald, Jr., 76, of Florence, SC, passed away on Saturday, February 8, 2025. Bob was born in Florence, SC, the son of the late John Robert and Mary Frances White McDonald. He graduated from McClenaghan High School where he played basketball. He took his love for basketball and took it to the next level having played for Francis Marion College, where he earned his bachelor's in Sociology. He served his country in the US Navy Seabees and was honorably discharged. After many years in the banking industry in Florence, he retired from JP Morgan Chase as a Mortgage Boker. He loved the game of golf, having played in tournaments all over including his favorite one in Jacksonville he played in every year. He even at one time was a member of every club in Florence, so he could have access to the game anytime he wanted to go. He was a member of First Baptist Church, but later in life attended Central UMC. Bob was a diehard Gamecock fan loving everything Garnet and Black.
He is preceded in death in addition to his parents by a brother-in-law, Raeford "Ray" Atkinson.
Surviving are his loving wife of 43 years, Mary Lynn Smith McDonald; a daughter, Mary Leigh McDonald Poole and her husband, Yancey E. Poole III; a step-son, Robert Gary Blackman; four grandchildren, Sebastian Caleb Poole, Amelia Marie Poole, Meredith Blackman and Cooper Blackman; a sister, Patricia McDonald Atkinson; a nephew, Bradford Scott "Brad" Atkinson and his wife Kelly Atkinson; two great-nephews, Braeden Scott Atkinson and Jacob Evan Atkinson.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, February 12, 2025 at Southside Baptist Church, directed by Cain Calcutt Funeral Home. Interment with military honors will follow in the Florence National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 1:00 PM just prior to the services at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
