IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Janet Louise
Agar Ryan
December 29, 1929 – December 1, 2013
Janet Louise Agar Ryan (83) of Florence, SC, passed away on Sunday, December 1, 2013. She is survived by her two brothers Harold Agar of Palm City, FL, and Donald Agar of Pittsfield, MA, and by her three children Philip Ryan of Huntsville, TX, Kathy Lewis of Florence, SC, and Mark Ryan of Titusville, FL. She was predeceased by her husband Richard Joseph Ryan and two daughters Donna Ann Ryan and Mary Ellen Ryan. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Janet was born in Pittsfield, MA, a daughter of the late Thomas and Margaret Agar. She met her husband of 65 years, Richard Ryan also from Pittsfield, just prior to his enlistment in the Navy during World War II. They were married shortly after his discharge. Janet and Richard resided in Pittsfield, MA until job opportunities brought them to New York, Alabama, and Florida. Janet had a career in records management with IBM. She was part of the support team at Kennedy Space Center for the Apollo moon missions and SkyLab. When Janet retired from IBM, she and her husband moved to DeLand, FL, and spent over 15 years doing all types of volunteer work at St. Peter's Catholic Church. Janet was very devoted to her family. No matter what the need: cook, nurse, companion, seamstress, babysitter, or friend; she was a "first responder" arriving with food in hand and ready to help. She was also a phenomenal cook and baker. She took great pleasure in baking for her family and others. Janet especially loved bringing joy through baking to special needs children. She would make monthly visits to children's homes in the DeLand, FL area bringing homemade treats for the children to enjoy. She also shared her baking talent through her participation in the ministry of consolation. There was seldom a bereavement luncheon that didn't have a dessert from her kitchen. Janet's love and sense of giving didn't stop with baking. She devoted a great deal of time to knitting and crocheting for charity. Through her work with the St. Anthony Parish Prayer Shawl Ministry in Florence, SC, she made countless baby blankets, scarves, shawls and lap blankets for those in need. Whether it was her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren or others in need, Janet was always there to love and to give. In her own quiet way she made a difference in so many lives. She will always be loved and greatly missed. The family will be receiving guests at Cain Funeral Home on Thursday, December 5th from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. The Rosary will begin at 6:30 PM followed by a vigil service at 7:00 PM. The funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, December 6th at 11:00 AM at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Florence. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the St. Anthony Catholic Church Prayer Shawl Ministry at 2536 Hoffmeyer Road, Florence, SC 29501.
