A funeral service for James Lee "Smitty" Smith, Jr., husband of Barbara Willard Smith, will be at 11:00AM Thursday, August 6, 2009, in the Chapel at Florence Memorial Gardens Mausoleum conducted by the Rev. Donnie Miles and with military honors by the Florence Veterans Honor Guard. Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:00-8:00PM at Cain Funeral Home. Mr. Smith, 70, died Monday August 3, 2009, in a local hospital. He was born, November 26, 1938 in Mobile, AL to the late James Lee and Ella Mae Sowell Smith. Mr. Smith grew up in Bay Minnette, AL and attended the University of Alabama. He served in the US Army as a Lab Tech for six years. He then worked for 29 years as a Lab Tech for Pee Dee Pathology, retiring in 1997. He was a member and former Deacon at Westminster Presbyterian Church. He was an avid sailor and pilot. He was a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and the Leatherman Senior Center. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are: sons, J. Mark Smith and Jeffery Michael (Becky) Smith all of Florence; grandchildren, James Robert and Thomas Michael Smith.
