James Robert Long, 87, of Florence, died June 1 in Florence, SC. He was born March 25, 1925 in Montgomery, PA to the late Ernest R. and Mae Melinda Long. Mr. Long was a member of Howard Chapel Methodist Church in Mt. Airy. He attended Pisgah United Methodist Church in Florence. He had previously been a member of St. Andrews Methodist Church in Edgewater. James was also a member of the V.F.W. Post 3181 and American Legion Post 91. He was a War World II Veteran and fought overseas in Normandy, landing on Omaha Beach with the 3rd Army under the command of General Patton. Mr. Long ran a rescue unit for Galesville Volunteer Fire Department in the 1960's and 70's. He was also a pressman for the evening Capital for many years. Mr. Long enjoyed camping and he enjoyed caring for his pets. Survivors include his wife; Trecia Emma (Sue) Hardesty Long; two sons, James Willard Long of Cambridge and John Wayne Long of Annapolis; daughter, Donna K. Eitel of Annapolis; stepson, Dewitt F. Gallahan III of Darlington; two stepdaughters, Patricia A. Corbin and Wanda Main both of Florence; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and a sister, Mary Norris. Mr. Long is preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Mary Frances Sinclair Long. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m.. Friday, June 8 at St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Edgewater.
