Obituary

Irene (Kretowicz) Wisniewska, 84, died peacefully in her sleep, in Florence, SC. Our mother was born in 1925, Krakow, Poland, the oldest of three children. Like many of that war generation-- They were "The Greatest Generation"- and her life was changed. At the outbreak of World War II, Irene was a high school student. She joined the Armia Krajowa (Polish Home Army). As a "Runner" in the underground, she carried dispatches between the fighting units of Warsawa and the surrounding countryside. Irene was wounded during the Warsawa Uprising and was imprisoned at Stalag X-B Sandbostel POW and Slave Camp and later Oberlangen Stalag VI-C. Upon her liberation by the Polish 1st Armored Division, Irene joined her father, Major Kretowicz RAF/ Polish Air Force in Palestine. She served the remainder of the war as a Sergeant in the Polish Army. Rather than return to Communist Poland, Irene entered the Polish Resettlement Camp in Nottingham, England. While studying in the textile's program, she met Andrzej Wisniewski and they married in 1950. They immigrated to the United States in 1952 and both were naturalized as US Citizens in 1957. Irene worked in the retail industry as department and store managers for a variety of employers. Andrzej and Irene retired in 1987 to Sunny Hills, Florida and in declining health she later (2003) moved to South Carolina. Andrzej and Irene had three children-Lech (Sandy) Wisniewski (Boulder, CO), Mark Wisniewski (deceased), and Hannah (Bruce) Caron (Florence, SC); and six grandchildren Kristy and Damion Beebe, Benjamin, Thomas, Brian, and Anna Wisniewski. Also surviving are her sister Krystina (Zbyszek) Malarska (Warsawa, Poland), brother Antoni (Jane) Kretowicz (San Deigo, CA), and a life-long friendship with Debbie (Tom) Cedoz Slavin (Toledo, OH). Irene will be interned with our father at the Powzki Cemetery (Warsawa, Poland). Services will be held at St. Anthony Catholic Church (Florence, SC) on Wednesday, July 8th at 3:00.
