Obituary

Herman Gardner was born on May 31, 1935 in Georgetown, SC to Jerry Gardner and Florence Wright-Gardner. He died on March 19, 2019 at the McLeod Hospice House after a brief illness.

He received his formal education at Howard High School in Georgetown, SC. While in school, Herman worked hard to support himself and to make sure that his mother always had the things she needed. From an early age, Herman had a knack for dressing well. That knack followed him throughout his life as everybody knows how handsome he was in his suits.

Herman left Georgetown and moved to New York soon after he graduated from High School. While there, he worked at several jobs, finally working at the New York City Transit Authority and retiring after over 25 years. He and his wife Sharon settled in Florence in August of 2006.

Herman was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses on 10/06/1962 and remained a devout Christian until he died. He was fondly known as Brother "G". He served as a Congregation Elder since 1986 and as a Regular Pioneer (full time minister) since 1992. Brother "G" truly loved the ministry. He shared his Bible-based hope with everyone he met. One of his favorite things to do was to visit the sick at their home, in the hospital and at Nursing Homes. He found much pleasure in encouraging others. Brother Gardner spent much time at the gym and he loved traveling and shopping.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Elizabeth Smith, Dorothy Nash, Rebecca Gallan and Flora Lee (Flo) Becote, three brothers William Benjamin (Benny) Gardner, Jerry Gardner and Ceal Gardner, a son Nolynn Gardner. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 37 years, Sharon Ann Filhiol (fe-o) Gardner, his daughter Avis Caldwell of New York, sons Phillip, Mark and Timothy Gardner all of New York, two sisters Ethel Bonner of Jacksonville, Florida, and Ann Rossetti of Washington, SC, as well as a host of relatives and friends who loved him dearly.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, March 23, 2019, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1215 Alligator Road, Effingham, SC 29541.
