Obituary

Metairie, La. Helen Horger Ulmer Wood, 107, of Sumter, SC, passed away Saturday, September 7, 2013. She was born to the late, Andrew Franklin Horger and Augusta Maude Inabinet, October 16, 1905 in Orangeburg, SC. She married the late Robert I. Ulmer in 1926 and after his death and raising their daughter, Elizabeth Ulmer, she married Joseph S. Wood. She lived nearly 70 years in her W. Liberty Street home in Sumter, SC. Helen had several professions in her many years. She was a seamstress in a chenille factory, a manager of a ladies ready to wear department, ran several general stores with her husband, and helped to make canvas wings for WWII aircrafts. She was a hard working wife and mother. Helen was a member of the Eastern Star, UDC and an active member of Trinity Methodist Church. Over her 70 years of membership at Trinity, she served as a nursery coordinator and a soloist. After a fall resulting in a broken hip, she joined her daughter Lib in Metairie, La where she was a member of Metairie Baptist Church. Helen is survived by one child: Elizabeth Ulmer Keller. She also is survived by three grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. A grave-side memorial service will be performed on Friday, September 13, 2013, at 11:00 am at the Florence National Cemetery, 803 East National Cemetery Road, Florence, SC, directed by Cain Funeral Home. The family has designated memorials to The Air Force Aid Society at www.afas.org., or The Wounded Warrior Program at www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
