George Burton Smith, 85. of Florence, SC, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 17, 2025, after a short illness.  George was born in Bradford, PA, a son of the late Mable Sterling Smith and George B. Smith, Sr.  He served his country proudly in the US Marine Corps having trained in communications and was a member of the military wrestling team.  George was a 1957 graduate of Gowanda Central HS in Gowanda, NY and went to community college for surveying.  He worked as a supervisor for Moench Tanning Co in Gowanda, NY and became self-employed for 25 years installing swimming pools.  He played football, baseball, wrestling, and basketball in high school and continued his love of sports as an adult. He participated in various bowling leagues and billiard leagues. He was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves and the Buffalo Bills. He was a member of Faith Covenant Church in Florence.

He is preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Norma Beguhl and Patty Abrams.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Ruth Elaine Metzger Smith; three children, Krys Smith, Kami Smith and Kari Smith all of Florence; a sister, Ruth (Smith) Worden of Shinglehouse, PA; a brother, Timothy Smith of Gowanda, NY; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Friday, January 24, 2025, at Cain Calcutt Funeral Home.  A funeral service will be held at 7:00 PM immediately following the visitation in the chapel of the funeral home.
