Obituary

George Walter Cruickshank, of Florence, S. C., passed away at the Presbyterian Community in Florence, S. C. on September 2, 2016, at the age of 86 years old. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Walter and Evelyn Cruickshank, of Providence, Rhode Island, and by his brother, Harry Cruickshank of Richmond, VA. Surviving are his kind and loving wife of 61 years, Shirley Grant Cruickshank; by his daughters, Cindy Johnson (Richard) and Susan Breeden (Kennedy), both of Florence, SC; his grandsons, Chris Johnson (Jessica), Ian Johnson, and Harrison Breeden, all of Florence, S. C.; his great grandson, Sean Johnson; his brothers, David Cruickshank of North Kingstown, Rhode Island, and Dick Cruickshank of Angier, N. C.; along with many nieces and nephews. George was born on September 9, 1929, in Providence, Rhode Island. He graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1945, and the University of Rhode Island in 1951, with a BS degree in mechanical engineering, and, at graduation, was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army, which he served in during the Korean Conflict period. In 1955, he married Shirley Grant McKnight of Providence, Rhode Island. Following his military service, George began his career with DuPont in Richmond, VA, and retired in Florence, SC, following a 30 year career with DuPont. In 1960, after moving to Florence, SC, with DuPont, George began his active servant leadership tenure at First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Deacon and an Elder. He served as a Boy Scout leader, and as an Eagle Scout mentor. George was also a member of the Golden Kiwanis Club; the DuPont retirees group; and the Swamp Fox Antique Car Club. He was an avid antique car buff, having fully restored many different models of antique cars. He was often kidded about his house being a part of his antique car garage. George lived his life for his family and for service to others, especially in his service work at First Presbyterian Church, which he actively shared and participated in with his wife, Shirley, for 56 years. He cared dearly for his two daughters and was a proud grandfather and great grandfather for his three grandsons and one great grandson. The Cruickshank family would like to express sincere thanks for the care provided to George by the medical staff at the Florence Presbyterian Community, with a special thanks to Dr. Michael Barrett, and by the medical staff at the McLeod Regional Medical Center. The family would also like to acknowledge the many years of medical service by Dr. Conyers O'Bryan, George's doctor and friend. A family graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at the Florence National Cemetery. A memorial service, directed by Cain-Calcutt-Stephens Funeral Home, will follow at 1:00 PM at the Chapel of the Florence Presbyterian Community, with a reception at the Florence Presbyterian Community, following the service in the Chapel. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Florence, SC, or the Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina, Florence, SC.
