February 6, 1942 – December 3, 2015
Lt. Commander Gary Allan Walters, USN Retired, 73, of Florence, SC, died on Thursday, December 3, 2015, at Medford Nursing Center. Born in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Gerald Andrew Walters and Mary Eugenia Vanderscott Walters.
Gary served his country in the US Navy, serving two tours in Vietnam before retiring after achieving the rank of Lt. Commander. He received his Bachelor's degree from Vanderbilt University and later went on to work for, and retire from Duke Energy where he worked as a nuclear engineer at the Hartsville, SC plant. He enjoyed playing golf and remote controlled airplanes. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Florence. He loved football and being part of the Steelers Nation. He was former president of the Grove Park Homeowners Association and former coach of youth sports.
Gary is survived by his wife of 50 years, Dixie; sons, Gary Andrew Walters of Simpsonville, Christopher Allan (Jennifer) Walters of Florence and James Sadler of Mechanicsburg, PA; and three grandchildren, Connor James Walters, Eliot Kathryn Walters and Amber Sadler.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM on Tuesday, December 8, 2015, in the chapel of Cain-Calcutt-Stephens Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 11:00 until 12:00 prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow at Florence National Cemetery, directed by Cain-Calcutt-Stephens Funeral Home.
