After an extended illness in South Carolina hospitals, Dr. Gary Stegall, 63, passed away on September 16, 2015. Dr. Stegall received his PHD, Doctorate of Music and Arts from the University of Maryland in Piano and Organ Performance. Dr. Stegall is known and highly regarded both as a soloist and a chamber musician with performances throughout North America, South America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa, including Performing Arts Series, Saint Martin in the Fields, London, England, East Garden Court Series, National Art Gallery, Atelier Series, American Church in Paris and Gibbes Art Gallery Art Series of Charleston, SC, with special invitation at St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. He served as Professor of Music at Coastal Carolina Music in Conway, SC for 17 years with retirement in May 2014. Prior to teaching at Coastal Carolina, he was director of Pastoral Music at Villanova University, Villanova, PA, as well as teaching at Converse and Columbia College in SC. Gary received numerous awards which includes Rotary International Graduate Fellowship in Brussels, Belgium, 1983-1984, SC Young Artist Award, 1980, Fullbright Scholar for his research of Belgium Composer, Joseph Jongen. He recorded and released a compact disc of solo piano music of this composer as well as writing a documentary about the composer's life. His music leadership led him over the years to several churches in the Low Country of SC as organist, the most recent at St. James Episcopal in McClellanville, SC, which he held a great fondness for. Gary's hobbies included all fine arts and his two beloved pets, Eddie, his Cornish Rex cat, and his Bichon dog, Atchel. Gary was preceded in death by his father, Linson Lee Stegall, and his mother, Janet Stegall; his oldest brother, Kenneth Lee Stegall, all originally from Fort Mill, SC; his uncles, Woody Stegall, Winfred "Fat" Stegall, Colson Stegall, J.W. Stegall, Richard Stegall and Bobby Stegall; grandparents, Henry and Addie Mae Autry Stegall; and two cousins, Butch Stegall and Bill Stegall. He is survived by his sister, Lynn Stegall of Memphis, TN, and his brother, Mark Stegall of Danville, VA. The family will receive friends for a Celebration of Life service at 11:00 AM, on Saturday, September 19, 2015, at Dobys Bridge Presbyterian Church in Fort Mill, SC.
