Obituary

Frances Lee Mathews Rabun, 92, lifelong servant of Christ, loving wife and mother, cherished sister, and treasured friend passed away peacefully in Florence, SC on Tuesday, November 12, 2013. She was married to John Thomas Rabun, Sr. for 65 years and their devotion to each other was a source of joy to both them and their family. Her beautiful smile could light up the room. She found endless enjoyment staying in touch with friends, old and new. She loved to travel-anywhere, anytime. And she loved long conversations filled with lots of laughter. Her determination was boundless. She continued to surprise us, which includes joining her husband in Heaven sooner than we were prepared to see her go. She was born September 8, 1921 in Birmingham, AL to the late Lyle Mills Mathews and Lillie Robinson Mathews. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Birmingham, AL, and the McDorman Sunday School Class. After raising her children, she returned to work at Regions Bank, in Birmingham, until her retirement. She is survived by her son John (Elizabeth) Rabun, Jr. of Florence, SC; daughter, Elizabeth (Michael) Warren of Richmond, VA; sister, Faye Mathews of Bonny Doon, CA; sister-in-law Vivian Rabun Irwin of Birmingham, AL; grandchildren, John (Kendall) Rabun III of New York, NY; Taylor (Scott) Johnsen of Windsor, CA; Kelly "Trip" (Anita) Ritter III of Wilson NC; and Davis (Gabi) Ritter of Winston Salem, NC; great-grandchildren James Johnsen, Emma Johnsen, Eliza Rabun, and Thomas Rabun. The family wishes to thank the staff of McLeod Family Medicine Center and McLeod Hospice, along with Michelle Johns for their extraordinary care and compassion. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 15, 2103 in the chapel on the Florence campus of the Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina. A private inurnment alongside her husband will be held at the Florence National Cemetery.
