A funeral service for Frances Henderson Alston, will be at 4:00PM, Wednesday, August 27, 2008, in Highland Park United Methodist Church with Rev. Neil Woods officiating. Interment will be at Noon Thursday in Carolina Memorial Park, Concord, NC. The family will receive friends tonight from 4:30-6:30PM at Cain Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to McLeod Hospice, P.O.Box 100551, Florence, SC 29502-0552. www.mcleodfoundation.org Mrs. Alston, 80, died Sunday, August 24, 2008, at her residence. She was born August 30, 1927, in Chesnee, SC, to the late John Bunyan and Bertie Cantrell Henderson. Mrs. Alston married Charles Norman Alston, Jr. in June of 1949. He died in June 1982. She attended Chesnee schools and graduated valedictorian of Chesnee High School in 1944 and graduated Cum Laude in 1948 from Winthrop College with a B.A. in Mathematics and a teacher certification. Mrs. Alston continued her education, receiving a Masters degree in Administration. She moved to North Carolina and became a math teacher at Concord High School in 1948 and was promoted to Director of Mathematics for Concord City Schools in 1969. In addition to teaching, she was an active member of a number of organizations including Delta Kappa Gamma International, Classroom Teachers Association, NCEA, NCAE, and NCTM. Mrs. Alston was also a member of Historic Cabarrus, Cabarrus Art Guild, Business and Professional Women, and the Dogwood Garden Club. She enjoyed painting and framing pictures, gardening, sewing and reading. She was an active member of Epworth Methodist Church serving on a number of committees at the church. She moved to Florence in 1987,and became a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church, the John Wesley Bible Class, the Frances Major Circle, taught Sunday school and played handbells. She was a member of the Highland Park quilters. Mrs. Alston also worked with Francis Marion University in the education department as supervisor for student teachers in Florence School District One. She was also a member of a garden club, enjoyed playing bridge and dabbling in the arts. Surviving are: daughter Julia (John) Johnson of Effingham; son, Charles Norman Alston, III of Metairie, LA; granddaughter, Leslie Shearer of Huntersville, NC; brothers, Robert E. Henderson of Chesnee, SC, and Max B. Henderson of Enoree, SC; and a number of nieces and nephews.
