Dorothea Rosalie Byrd passed away on Monday, September 1, 2014 at Four Seasons Hospice in Hendersonville, NC. She was 93. Rosalie was born on May 21, 1921 in Elko, Illinois and spent most of her young life traveling with family and father's employment. She lived in Mississippi, Louisiana, Montana, Washington, South Carolina, Illinois, and Kansas. Returning to South Carolina after marriage, she resided in Myrtle Beach and moved to Florence in 1949, where she resided until April. Recently she had been an In Home Hospice patient residing with her daughter in Hendersonville. Rosalie was employed as the Purchasing Agent for McLeod Infirmary/McLeod Regional Medical for 32 years and subsequently retired with JC Penney after 20 years of part time sales. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Florence and of the Faithful Helpers Sunday School Class. Rosalie loved her home and yard and for many years cared for all details alone, even continuing to cut her grass until her 80's. She loved quilting and was a former member of the Swamp Fox quilters group and received recognition for her hand-made quilts. She was an avid league bowler and enjoyed a good round of golf. She will be sorely missed by those left behind, but they are joyous knowing she is with her Savior, Jesus. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Arthur Marion Byrd, Sr., her parents, Clara Charlotte and Moses Richard Newell and one brother, Richard Newell. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Byrd Braznell and husband Steve of Hendersonville, NC and by her son, Arthur Marion "Marty" Byrd, Jr., three sisters, Rae Meriaux (Richard), Glenda Smith, Lacene Holland, and one brother, John Newell. Also, a granddaughter, Kara Lemire (Marc), and a great grandson, Bryce Lemire. Visitation will be held at Cain Funeral Home at 10 AM on Thursday, September 4, with graveside services following at Florence Memorial Gardens at 11 AM on Thursday, September 4.
