IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Cynthia "Cindy"
Gilmore Smith
March 15, 1960 – May 19, 2016
Cynthia "Cindy" Gilmore Smith, born in DeLand, Florida, passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer at home on Thursday, May 19, 2016, at the age of 56. Cynthia is predeceased by her father, Roger Sprague Gilmore. Born and raised in DeLand, FL. in 1960, she graduated from DeLand High School in 1978 and began taking classes at Daytona Beach Community College and Florida State University. She moved to Florence, SC and spent the next 11 years raising her children and working as a floral designer before going on to earn a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Francis Marion University. After being hired by Florence School District One as a third and fourth grade teacher, she went on to earn a Master's Degree from Walden University in 2007 and her National Board Certification in 2008. She continued to teach as this was her passion until she could no longer give her students the attention she felt they deserved. Cindy enjoyed her family, her church, teaching, gardening and creating holiday decorations for her home. She spent as much of her free time as she could with her grandson, Roger. Grandma was determined to educate him at an early age. While words cannot describe the level of love and attention she bestowed upon him, she was fond of saying, "I love you to the moon and back!" Cindy is survived by her loving and adoring husband of 15 years, Leonard "Len" A. Smith, Jr. They were married in Florence, SC on December 15, 2000. She is lovingly remembered by her children, Andrew Charles Harrell, currently stationed in Japan with the USAF, and Amanda Elizabeth Harrell of Florence, SC; her grandson, Roger Gilmore Harrell, son of Amanda; her mother, Mary Christian Gilmore; her brothers, Warren Sprague (Traci) Gilmore of Charlotte, NC and Thomas Gregory "Greg" (Celeste) Gilmore of DeLand, FL; her sister Linda Gilmore Ryland of DeLand, FL; nieces, Sloane Gilmore, Delaina Ryland and Bailey Gilmore; and nephews, Christian Ryland, Stephen Gilmore, Fletcher Gilmore, Gunnar Gilmore, and Dexter Gilmore. A memorial service will be held at 5:00 pm on Thursday, May 26, 2016 at the First Baptist Church of Darlington, directed by Cain Calcutt-Stephens Funeral Home. The family will receive friends immediately following the services at the church. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Darlington or to the Future Scholar College Savings Plan for Roger Gilmore Harrell, c/o Leonard Smith, 1882 Westmoreland Avenue, Florence, SC 29505.
