A funeral service for Claude E. Harris, Jr., will be at 4:00PM, Sunday, August 10, 2008, in Cain Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Rev. John Collins and Pastor Bryan Chapman. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:00 to 8:00PM at the funeral home. The family prefers plants or flowers that can be transplanted to the garden or pots. Mr. Harris was an avid gardener and they would like to have these in memory of him. Mr. Harris, 89, died Thursday, August 7, 2008, in a local hospital. He was born August 31, 1918, in Florence to the late Claude E. and Elizabeth Oglesby Harris. Mr. Harris was a member of Grace Baptist Church. He was a former member of the Sons of The American Legion, Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge and a charter member of the Ruritan Club. He helped organize and was Past President of the SC Physical Handicap Society. He was also a Top Individual Fundraiser of the March of Dimes and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Walk America 2007. Surviving, are: daughters, Libby H. Padgett of Florence and Laura (Joe) Turner of Pamplico; son, Claude E. Harris, III of Lake City; grandchildren, Betsy Padgett, Elizabeth A. Turner and Randy D. Turner (fiancee, Shyntarvalyn Thomas); great grandson, Nathaniel D. Edwards; brothers, Robert B. Harris of Florence and John C. Harris of Durham, NC
