IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Charlotte Leitner
Berry
May 22, 1920 – December 21, 2023
Mrs. Charlotte Leitner Berry, 103, of The Manor, Florence, SC, died on December 21, 2023 of natural causes while in Hospice.
Mrs. Berry was born in Fairfield County, the seventh child of Charles Henry and Nellie Salley Leitner. She was an exceptional student and entered Winthrop College at the tender age of 16. After graduation she met and married her husband, Richard W. Berry. They lived in Spartanburg with their two children until 1960 when they moved to Columbia. There Charlotte was a dedicated member of Trenholm Road United Methodist Church. After a stent as a stay-at-home mom, she spent her working years at the IRS. She became an avid golfer during this time and remained a lifelong fan. For several years after retirement, she lived with her husband at Myrtle Beach where she hosted numerous family gatherings, instilling a deep love for the ocean in all her progeny. She and her husband moved to The Manor in 2003.
Affectionately known as Granny by her grandchildren and Gigi by her great-grands, Charlotte was a remarkable person. She read voraciously throughout her life and could always be called on for the definition of some unknown word. She was a renowned letter writer and loved nothing better than receiving an epistle from her beloved family members. Her birthday on May 22 was traditionally known as "Barefoot Day" by her family, the unofficial start of summer when all had permission to abandon their shoes for the duration of the season. Ever the great storyteller, Charlotte was at the center of any gathering, sharing a joke, playing a fiercely competitive game of cards or Yahtzee, or recalling family history. Her love for clever or funny birthday cards set her children and grandchildren in search of the perfect one to cause her to erupt into gales of infectious laughter. Her personal warmth and ever-present laugh will be sorely missed by all of us who loved her.
She is predeceased by her husband, her parents, and her six siblings.
She is survived by her daughter, Salley B. Davidson (Roger Malfatti); son, Richard W. Rogers-Berry (Christine); grandchildren, Jennifer M. Lewis, Amanda F. Martin, Rachel B. Eaton, Mark R. Berry, David R. Rogers-Berry; great grandchildren, Hannah Lewis, Wesley Eaton, Jacob Eaton, Leah Eaton, Foxx Martin, Celina Berry, Cameron Berry; and nieces, Christine Gunnells and Charlotte Hendrix.
A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 am on January 28, 2024, in the Ingram Chapel at The Manor. The family will receive friends following the service in The Manor Club House. Cain Calcutt Funeral Home is honored to serve the Berry family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Manor Employee Christmas Fund c/o The Manor, 2100 Twin Church Rd., Florence, SC 29501.
