Florence, SC Charles Edwin Goff, 91, of Florence, SC, died on Thursday, December 11, 2014, at McLeod Hospice House. He was born in Burnt House, WVA, a son of the late Simon Draper and Eva Lora Law Goff. Charles is predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Shirlee Jean Goff and his daughter, Sherrie Goff Barrett. At age 19, Charles was the co-pilot of a B-17 heavy bomber which completed 30 missions, mostly over Germany in World War II. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions in several engagements. He is also generally credited with saving his crew and crippled bomber while acting as a pilot during an attack by German fighter aircraft. Aggressive and skillful flying by then Lieutenant Goff resulted in the destruction of one German fighter and the retreat of a second fighter. Charles later served in the intelligence sections of the Air Force Reserve and retired with the rank of Major. Charles was also a highly successful businessman, beginning with a tiny soda shop called "The Spot" in Harrisville, SV. He later opened restaurants in Florence, SC, and designed and built retail buildings know as Alpine Aire. Charles was a good and brave man, a loving father, a devoted husband, and a friend to many. He exemplified the "Greatest Generation". He will be missed. He is survived by his son in law, Robert Barrett of Florence, SC; granddaughter, Laurel Wolcott and great-grandson, Edmund Matthew Wolcott, both of Spartanburg, SC; and nephew, Gene Burns of Vienna, WVA. A private service will be held at a later date.
