Obituary

The Honorable Charlene Damron Hewitt, 87, of Florence, passed away peacefully at her home with her family gathered around her on Monday, March 30, 2026.

Mrs. Hewitt was born in Oak Hill, Ohio, a daughter of the late George R. and Emma Miller Damron. She retired as Chief City Judge after 36 years of employment with the city of Florence, SC. She had received her BS from Limestone College, and later earned a Double Masters in Human Resource Development and Management, she also attended National Judicial College in Reno, NV and received a certificate of Advanced Judicial Studies. She was a member of the SC Summary Court Judges Association and the National Judges Association, where she served as President for 2013-2014, and Senior Director for 2015-2016. She was a long-time member of Evergreen Baptist Church.

While he was serving in the US Air Force, she met the love of her life, Tommy Hewitt, and moved to his hometown of Florence with him in 1967. They were married for 60 years, until his death in 2021.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Donna Spriggs, Dellia Yerby, and Frieda Garland; brothers, Vernon Damron and Jerry Damron.

Surviving are her sons, Michael (Rebecca) Hewitt, Steven (Jeannette) Hewitt, and honorary son, Kevin (Lori) Sattele; grandchildren, Brook Lamb (Josh) Inabinet, Amber (C.J.) Crawford, honorary grandchildren, Lauren, Jenna, and Justin (Lyndsey); great-grandchildren, Kayden and Khloe Inabinet, Nickolas, Iann, Trenton, and Payton Crawford, honorary great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Jacob, and James; nieces, Dana (Kent) Poston and their children, Thomas and Katelyn Summerford, Celeste (Jack) Bryant and their daughter, Cellers, and special niece, Lisa Rae Garland; along with Vickie Hewitt, the recipient of her prized possession, Suzi.

Memorials may be made to the City of Florence Police Benevolent Fund, 324 W. Evans Street, Florence, SC 29501.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm Friday, April 3, 2026 at Evergreen Baptist Church with the service to follow at 3:00 pm at the church.
