Obituary

Cecile (Cece) Hoylen (age 90), beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, a true southern bell, who was wise, wonderful, sweet and sassy and loved by all of her family and friends, passed away Friday, February 03, 2017, at McLeod Hospice House, Florence SC after a brief illness. Cecile Small was born June 11, 1926, in what was to become the Community of Ketchup (Catch-Up) Town in Horry County SC, the daughter of Herbert Small and Blanche Johanna Stroud Small. She attended Mt. Pisgah Grade School, Floyds High School and in 1944 graduated from Draughon's Business College, Columbia SC. While attending college she was introduced to a handsome Yankee from Pennsylvania, Lieutenant William (Bill) H Hoylen, US Army Air Corps, who was destined to become her husband. On April 4, 1945, Cecile Small and Lt. William H Hoylen were married in Gulfport, MS. From 1945 until she moved to Florence, SC in 1961 Cece had the daunting task of establishing homes in Gulfport MS, Tucson AZ, Roswell NM, Cleveland OH, Corry PA, Stuttgart, Germany and Ketchup Town SC. During this time, Cece and Bill focused on building a strong marriage and raising a family to appreciation and respect the differences and similarities that exist in the world. Cecile began her professional career, at age 18; working for the Veteran's Administration in Columbia, SC and was rapidly promoted and transferred to Washington, DC where she worked until relocating to Gulfport, MS. She resumed her business career in 1960 as secretary for Investment Life & Trust Co., Mullins, SC which ended with the family's move to Florence. In March 1962 she began her association with Aiken & Co. in the Mortgage Loan Department, in 1964 she was transferred to the Insurance Department and in May 1966 after successfully completing South Carolina state requirements and passing the insurance agent's examination the firm's president, J. B. Aiken Jr. announced the promotion of Cecile S. Hoylen to Underwriter for Aiken & Company. During her tenure with Aiken & Co. Cecile's career responsibilities included, underwriter, fire and casualty agent, notary public, supervisor in the insurance department of Aiken and Co. and through a special arrangement with Plantation Underwriters, she supervised all agency business written in the states of North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. In recognition of her hard work and dedication, in 1975 Mrs. Hoylen was chosen Florence's "Insurance Woman of the Year" and selected as one of five finalist for Florence Professional Woman of the Year. In the past, she served on the board of directors for the Florence Association of Insurance Women (for two terms); SC Reserve Officers Association Ladies; state secretary-treasurer for one term); was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Oakdale Country Club, and B.P.O.E. Ladies, Corry, Pa. She was an avid traveler at home and abroad having visited all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, Israel, 8 countries in Europe and the islands of the Caribbean. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Florence, S.C. She was a founding member of the 'Reach Out and Touch Someone for Christ' Ministry, a member of the Senior Adult Bible School, the Betty Mears Mission Group, participated in the Prison Ministry and was a life long advocate for religious tolerance between the Christian faiths. She was a long time supporter of Food for the Poor and many other charities. She is predeceased by her husband of 54 years William H Hoylen (May 15, 1999), her parents Herbert Small (Oct 25, 1949) and Blanche Stroud Small (Dec, 1964), her siblings Ruth S Ham (May 17, 1998), Chalmer D Small (Jul 16, 1996) and Mable (Lynn) Thomas Elliott (Mar 21, 2011); her nephews Phillip Ham (Nov 30, 1997), Randall Small (Feb 1, 2014 ), grandnephew Jeffrey Small (Dec 29, 2010) and grandniece Kimberly Small (Feb 17, 1994). She is survived by her children: Kristine (Kris) H Geddings (Gerald L. Geddings), Laura Michelle (Mickey) Hoylen, William (Billy) H Hoylen II (Marianne R Hoylen); grandchildren: Michelle G Wilson (William A Wilson III), Heather H Bormann (A. J. Bormann), Staci H Duffee (Henry S. Duffee, Jr.); great-grandchildren: Amber M Wilson, William H Bormann and Brody W Bormann and great-great-grandson Caden T Notario. She is also survived by her nephews: Nelson Small, Herbert Small, Charles Jansen, Tab Schaeffer, Mark Schaefer, Steve Schaefer, Scott Gordon and her nieces: Joan H Strickland, Billie Lou Boyette, Jackie Keene, Susan Buffkin, Gayle Hayes, Vicki Annico, Teri Schaeffer, Patty Anderson, Teresa Gilbert, Joan Krofchick, Peggy Bradley, Mary Crawford and a host of grandnieces and nephews and great-grandnieces and nephews whose lives she followed and cherished. Funeral services for Cecile S Hoylen will be held Sunday February 5, 2017, at 2:00 pm at Ebenezer Baptist Church, directed by Cain Calcutt-Stephens Funeral Home with interment to follow at Florence Memorial Gardens. The Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 PM on Saturday, February 4, 2017, at Cain Caclutt-Stephens Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Ebenezer Baptist Church Building Fund, McLeod Hospice House or to a charity of one's choice.
