Florence, SC Carlton Ellsworth Burke, Sr., 96, of Florence, formerly of Manchester, Connecticut, died Sunday, February 16, 2014 in Florence, SC. He was born June 1, 1917 in Hartford, CT to the late Harold and Lula Gallup Burke. In addition to his parents, Carlton was preceded in death by brothers, Gilbert Burke, Harold Burke and Alden Burke. Carlton was a member of America's greatest generation, having served in the US Army Air Corps during WWII. He was a Master Mason in the Manchester, Connecticut Lodge and was a member of the American Legion. He was an avid coin collector who loved to play the piano and guitar. Carlton was retired from Traveler's Insurance. He and Doris travelled extensively through Europe, China, Russia, Australia, Hawaii and Alaska. Carlton is survived by his wife of 71 years, Doris Fox Burke, his daughter, Kathleen (Marty) Chmielecki of Florence, SC; his son, Carlton (Margaret) Burke Jr. of Augusta, ME; a brother, Kenneth E Burke of MA; 3 granddaughters, Alison, Andrea, Courtney; 3 grandsons, Matthew, Benjamin, Daniel; and 15 great-grandchildren.. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 21, 2014, at St. John's Church. Memorials may be made to St. John's Church, The Alzheimer's Association or Embrace Hospice.
